![]() There's actually a fair amount of nationalism in Thedas, though. Who cares if that other human's skin is a few shades darker? That guy over there has fucking horns and a violently imperialist philosophy. ![]() Not just skin color, but real, honest-to-Maker race in the oldest sense of the word. What modern society would consider "race" doesn't really enter into Thedas' social mores, because they really do have race. Regarding your last point, I think that's all very intentional. Further, it's interesting to me that the game depicts racism against elves, but I haven't seen any in-game presentation of racism between different ethnicities of human (beyond just, "oh those people from orlais are goofballs and those people from Tevinter are all blood mages"). Interestingly, despite that, many people in Dragon age are quite racist (hating elves, not understanding dwarves, etc). That said, apparently dragon age society is very progressive and gender/sexual issues are no more issues than anything else. It's the same reason that its reasonable that some NPC might not believe that the Inquisitor is the Herald of Andraste - sure magic exists and crazy things happen but that doesn't mean that you can't still be skeptical and try to fit things into a worldview based on what is probable/commonplace. In our world, people don't respond to unusual conversations with "look, I have a furry four-legged domesticated animal cohabitating and barking in my home and you have a four-doored, four-seat metal machine with round rubber donuts spinning to let you speed down stone paths, I don't think we're in any position to decide what's normal." Those things are normal to us, no matter how "crazy" or "unusual" you present them as. I like the message and what it really means, but the only thing I disagree about that logic is that I think Qunari and dwarves are normal in that world so it doesn't make sense that he'd say that, implying that he and dwarves aren't normal.
